Module 3 Practice Activity 3

Lesson Ideas for Image Blogs in the Classroom:

Title: Critical Viewing
Objective: Students will complete daily picture inspired writing assignments that help use vocabulary words in contextual situations.
Materials: Flickr, projector, paper, vocab list, timer
Standards:
LACC.910.L.3.4: Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grades 9–10 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.
  1. Use context (e.g., the overall meaning of a sentence, paragraph, or text; a word’s position or function in a sentence) as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.
  2. Identify and correctly use patterns of word changes that indicate different meanings or parts of speech (e.g., analyze, analysis, analytical; advocate, advocacy).
  3. Consult general and specialized reference materials (e.g., dictionaries, glossaries, thesauruses), both print and digital, to find the pronunciation of a word or determine or clarify its precise meaning, its part of speech, or its etymology.
  4. Verify the preliminary determination of the meaning of a word or phrase (e.g., by checking the inferred meaning in context or in a dictionary)
Lesson Instructions:

1. This assignment can be used as a bell work activity or for review before an upcoming vocab quiz. This could also be used as homework where students must log on to flickr from home and leave their responses in the comment field.
2. Students will arrive in class to see the teacher's flickr account displayed on the projector. Each day the students will see a set of pictures which may include a setting, object, or other interesting images and the caption will contain three vocabulary words. (see the example below)
3. Students will be asked to write a short (one to two paragraphs) using the images in the picture and using all three vocabulary words. One word must be used negatively (see example below)

Using the following pictures above for inspiration create a story that uses the words "obtrude," "elated" and "paucity" (one word must used negatively ex: she did NOT obtrude)

Title:  Mood Collage
Objective: Students will create collages on Flickr that represent the setting, mood, and tone of one short story that was read during the quarter.
Materials: Flickr, Literature Book, Rubric
Standards:
LACC.910.L.3.5: Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.
  1. Interpret figures of speech (e.g., euphemism, oxymoron) in context and analyze their role in the text.
  2. Analyze nuances in the meaning of words with similar denotations.
LACC.910.RI.1.2: Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.
LACC.910.WHST.2.6: Use technology, including the Internet, to produce, publish, and update individual or shared writing products, taking advantage of technology’s capacity to link to other information and to display information flexibly and dynamically.
Lesson Instructions:

1. Students set up their own flickr accounts and choose a short story to focus on
2. Students create collages by collecting images that help visually represent the story's setting, mood, and tone.
3. Students are required to caption the pictures according to what aspect they represent.
4. Students must create comments for each category (mood, setting, tone) that ask their classmates to answer discussion questions.
5. Students present their flickr pages to the class as we read..
