Lesson One:

Title: "Lit"-a-pedia
Materials: Class wiki page, list of comprehensive grade level literary terms.

» LA.910.2.1.4: The student will identify and analyze universal themes and symbols across genres and historical periods, and explain their significance;     Cognitive Complexity: N/A    l    Date Adopted or Revised: 01/07 Objective: Students will create a wikipedia style online literary terms dictionary. Students are expected to define the term they are assigned, create their own example, create a non-example (or an red-herring style example) and cite two examples each from two works we read in class and one work they read outside of class. Students should be able to justify these examples with evaluations and analysis included in each example. Lesson Instructions: 1. Assign students one literary term. Have them log into a class wiki and create a page titled with the term they have been assigned. 2. The students term page should contain three sub pages: definition, examples, and literary examples.  3. The definition page should contain the definition of the word as well as a visual aid (all internet content should be cited). 4. The examples page should contain examples created by the student and non-examples (at least one) depicting ways that the term is often misused.  5. Literary examples should contain a total of 6 examples, two a piece from two separate works read in class, and two from a work the student read outside of class. 6. Students will be assigned a Greek God or Goddess. Students will create an entry for that character and compare their entry to Wikipedia. Lesson Instructions:  1. Students will be assigned a God or Goddess and a wiki page for the character.  2. Students will be required to do research on their God or Goddess to create information on the following pages: a. Origin-students will explore the creation story associated with the god or goddess b. Profile- students will explain what their god or goddess does for the people (god of the sea? god of love?). Students should have 3 sub pages for this section each chronicling the mythology surrounding that god or goddess.  c. Genealogy- students will  catalog how the god or goddess relates to other Greek gods d. Literary History- students will write summaries of their god's appearance in notable literary works e. Visual- students will create a visual page representing their god or goddess f. bibliography- students will cite their resources (students are not permitted to use Wikipedia g. Comparable- students will create a page that compares their entry to Wikipedia's entry, listing at least three things that wikipedia had in their entry that the student did not and the opposite.
